7 REDAN STREET, MOSMAN NSW

Our client had recently purchased a building complex with previously approved Development Application plans providing for major renovation and extensions to 4 units.

The Development Application included the addition of two large garages providing 4 car spots. The architects’ imaginative design, harnessed the beauty of natural sandstone for the garage space. Although the garaging would require a large footprint; garden and green space was retained by creating a ‘green’ rooftop garden. The efficient use of space and the visual impact has been maximised by Jana Osvald from Umbaco Landscape Architects and their team.

A truly inspiring transformation of the space behind the building.

61 NICKSON STREET, SURRY HILLS

Commercial/residential – two levels of commercial space for offices or showroom, 1 single bed apartment and 1 x 2-bedroom apartment.

This was an exciting project, implementing the design of renowned architect William Smart from Smart Design. The original elements of the heritage terrace were complemented by modern design elements to create functional spaces to work and live. In keeping with the brickwork of the terrace, the new design extensively utilises face bricks in an external curved blade wall, that creates a unique façade to the Building.

Restricted space on site was overcome by incorporating an open basement in the design. Jackal Constructions overcame the confined space for excavating below the existing building, by installing a temporary support structure. Lined CFA concrete piling and shotcrete enabled a sound, open space to be created, providing a strong foundation for the terrace and works above. The owner was excited to see the project come together.

SAY "HI" TO THE HYBRID OFFICE

The ideal office layout has changed significantly since the post-war design based on enclosed spaces and cubicles gave way to ‘open-plan’.

Open-plan offices were thought to facilitate communication and create a more relaxed atmosphere where teamwork and creativity could flourish. This trend proved so popular that by the turn of the century open-plan offices were pretty much ubiquitous.

But open-plan offices are not without their problems. They tend to be noisier, leading to distractions and lost productivity. The lack of privacy can make confidential phone calls and meetings more difficult. And while the office extrovert might love the wide-open spaces, more reserved employees often don't cope so well.

But a new trend is using the best of both styles: an adaptable space that allows workers to interact and collaborate without stifling creativity, and yet provides the privacy needed to ensure focus and productivity.

Welcome to the ‘hybrid’ office layout. As Fortune Magazine put it, the hybrid office “incorporates a range of spaces and gives employees the autonomy to move between them throughout the day.”

The key to the success of a hybrid office is diversity. Instead of a cavernous open area or a collection of pokey cubicles, a hybrid office offers a range of spaces. There are open workspaces and lounges allowing for group collaboration and socialising, as well as private cubicles or offices for individual work, phone calls and small meetings.

A team meeting at 10 am? Let’s meet in the lounge. Important phone call with a key client? Office 5 is available.

One of the keys to the success of the hybrid office is mobile technology and cloud-based software and data storage. No longer shackled to a fixed phone and a desktop computer, employees can move freely between spaces through the work day.

A related trend is ‘hot-desking’, where desks and workspaces are shared by multiple employees during the day. This is especially useful where workers spend much of their time outside the office.

The hybrid concept allows you to create an office layout to suit the specific needs of your business and its workers, and Jackal Constructions can help you get there.

Whether it’s a brand new office space or a renovation, at Jackal Constructions we offer a full range of building services, with the expertise to see your project through to successful, on-time completion.
JULIETT STREET MARRICKVILLE

The Juliett Street, Marrickville project involved a complete transformation of an existing freestanding residence. By reusing bricks from the original building and combining new materials, including extensive use of glass, this created a relaxed light-filled living environment.

By reconfiguring rooms to the rear of the property, a private leafy courtyard was created. In addition, a roof top garden over the rear garage provides an outdoor space for quiet relaxation.

The completed project resulted in a modern, sophisticated home that the client thoroughly enjoys.

KIRRIBILLI MARINA

An update and refurbishment of an existing Marina complex in Kirribilli. Jackal Constructions coordinated works to improve functionality and serviceability of the site. The complexity of harbourside working, in a marine environment was easily overcome. Importantly, timber wharves at the end of their service life were replaced by new steel piles, floating pontoons and more extensive decking.

Complementing the existing buildings, additional commercial spaces were created to house further office accommodation and marine-related worksites. Jackal led the process of design and construction of additional single-storey workshop space and a two-storey extension to the existing building.

The integration of the new buildings with the existing workspaces and the extension of trafficable wharves has maximised the functionality of the entire marina, whilst improving the overall look of the site which adjoins much used public space.
